HazelMail was created by me, Michael Lato, and was inspired by my mother, Hazel. Mom's Southern words of wisdom even appear on the homepage. My mother was a telephone company employee, so communication with friends and family was a way of life for us. We were raised around slogans like "Reach out and touch someone" and "Let your fingers do the walking."

My mother encouraged me from an early age to travel and to share my memories. In fact, I recently discovered that my mom kept every postcard I ever sent to her. Memories are meant to be preserved. Digital photos are ephemeral, but postcards can stick to a refrigerator door for a lifetime. I wanted to create a way for people to take a digital photo and turn it a lasting keepsake the receiver will cherish and a sentiment they will feel for a long time.

On the business front, I learned firsthand the power that photos have in connecting people. From 2004 to 2007, I was part of the launch team working in business development at Fotolog (www.fotolog.com), the world's largest photo blogging service. I helped Fotolog grow from a small network to a global community with 18 million subscribers in over 200 countries
